Reunion 1973-78/79

After 44 years and a few false starts we finally managed to get together for an early festive reunion at the Spring Tavern.

44 years later!

For those of you that don't know us, we are Steve Thorn, Greg Brown and David Bathgate, pupils at the school through the mid 70's.

To be fair, not much of a story to tell here other than to say that if you are thinking of pulling a reunion together but keep putting it off or even just considering trying to contact your old pals... make sure you do it. I think I speak for all three of us when I say I wish we had done it sooner.

We left the Castle back in 78/79 and although we were great friends during our time together at school for some reason we never kept in touch. In the many years that followed we all had successful careers (despite the dodgy school reports), relationships, marriages, children, ups and downs and through all of that, some great memories of our times at the Castle.

I did manage to link up with Greg through email at one point but as always we often let life get in the way and the meeting we talked about never happened. With the emergence of social media I bit the bullet and tried again to trace and get hold of Greg and David but drew a blank. Knowing Greg was an avid Palace fan, I even signed up to the Eagles fan forum... a brave move for a Spurs fan! Imagine my shock when I came across an obituary for a fan named Greg Brown who appeared to be a similar age. I was devastated and kicked myself for not trying to make contact sooner. In desperation I contacted Carol Hernandez at the Castle to see if she could help and she kindly offered to send an email to the address she had on file. Shortly after, I received contact from Greg who was well and truly still in the land of the living! Who would have believed there were two Palace fans named Greg Brown! Spookily, Greg had also contacted Carol to try and locate David. It all seemed to fall into place and a few months later, here we are celebrating the good times back in Ewell village.

We would love to get together with more Old Ewellians who were at the Castle between 1973 and 1978/79 with a view to arranging another reunion in the early part of next year. Perhaps a Spring reunion in the Spring Tavern... how fitting!

Meanwhile, festive greetings to all Old Ewellians and everyone connected with the school and special thanks to Carol Hernandez, without whom this probably wouldn't have happened! Thank you!
